In Cochrane, the basement wall itself rarely causes trouble. Most of the town was built recently, so the walls we open up for new windows and doors are typically poured and reinforced: even material that leaves a clean edge for a frame to seal against and carries load well once a steel lintel goes in above. We still find the rebar before settling where a window or door goes, and we measure thickness on site instead of assuming it. The soil is another matter, and in Cochrane it drives most decisions. The town sits on compact glacial till studded with cobbles and boulders, and bedrock rises closer to the surface the further west you go up out of the Bow valley.
