Separate Entrance Doors for Cochrane homes
Cochrane has the slope that walk-out basement doors need. Land rises to the west and many lots fall away at the back or side, so a door that opens straight onto the yard is realistic here more often than in most of our other areas. Most walls are modern reinforced concrete, which takes a door opening predictably. What reverses the usual order is underground: compact till full of cobbles, and bedrock close to the surface higher up the slope. Excavating the approach or stairwell for the door can take longer than making the opening.
So for a Cochrane basement door we assess the dig before the wall, and any retaining is designed for rocky ground rather than clean backfill. Most callers are families on a sloped lot who want the lower floor to open to the yard; on the right lot the grade makes that a true walk-out, and on a flatter one it becomes a below-grade entrance door instead. A door takes out much more foundation than a window. The load above it and the path that load will take around the opening are worked out before cutting starts.
Support and locates
Temporary shoring is installed wherever the engineering asks for it, and buried lines are marked through Alberta One-Call ahead of any digging.
Dig the stairwell
The area outside is excavated to floor depth, exposing the wall from top to bottom and giving the new door a landing to swing onto.
Open the wall
The doorway is sawn to its marked outline, removed in sections, and spanned by a steel lintel or header sized for the wall it now carries.
Door, steps, walls
The exterior door is hung and sealed, the steps are built, and retaining walls with drainage keep the dug-out area stable for good.
